Auckland (NZ): Waitomo Glowworm Cave

Yesterday, I arrived in Auckland and took almost all brochures in the hotel lobby, to find out, what I can visit here in the next four days.

By the way, that´s my travel philosophy since the beginning of my trip: First you arrive, and then you organize you day.

In the evening, I booked with Great Sights my ticket to the Waitomo Glowworm Cave @Bine, I remembered that you told me about it! :-)

Pick-up time 7am. A very long way (nearly 6hours round-trip in the bus), but totally worth it!

During the bus travel, our guide talked about Maori and European history of the Waikato region. Very interesting.

The guided tour through the galleries of the Glowworm Caves ends with a boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto. The group is completely in the dark on the boat (if you are claustrophobic, like the man behind me, think twice, if you want to go in a dark cave filled with water!!!).

I loved it!!! The illuminated cave stalagmites and stalactites are amazing! In every rock you can imagine something. Our guide showed us for example the elephant, the dreadlocks of bob marley, the kiwi doing a bungee, a family, the cathedral with an organ. Unfortunately, photography isn´t allowed inside the cave :-( so I took photos of the postcards, sorry for the bad quality. (check out my today´s creation "imaginary grotto")

The best was the ride through the Grotto:
The floating sound of the boat in the darkness and thousands of mini Glowworm lights on the cave ceiling - like stars, but not so far - absolutely spectacular! I would like to spend a night there. Fantastic romantic atmosphere! :-)
